The Poás Volcano is one of many active volcanos in Costa Rica, but this one is the closest to where you land. Also it´s one of few where you are allowed to walk super close to the crater. It´s located 13.5 km away from the airport (about 35 minutes). Recommended to visit during mornings so you can see the crater, otherwise it may be too cloudy. In order to visit this National Park, you should buy your tickets in advance for a specific date and time. Getting to the volcano from the city of Alajuela is easy. You will enjoy wonderful views along the way. The landscape will include coffee plantations, strawbery plantations and ornamental plants, beautiful mountains with Pine trees and farms. If you rented a car, just put Poas Volcano on Waze, Google maps, Maps, MAPS.ME, etc and it will lead you there.
By car:
Route No. 1: From San Jose, take the General Cañas highway to the city of Alajuela. From there, take Route No. 712 to Poasito, through Itiquís communities and Fraijanes, following the signs to the volcano.
Route No. 2: Heredia, up to Barva de Heredia - Varablanca - Poasito.
By bus:

We suggest you purchase your tickets for Poas Volcano at 10:40 am o 11:00 am when using public bus to Access the park so you have enough time to get there on time.
Waze: Centro Recreativo Los Chorros.
This is a self guided tour. You can get there by car, any type of car can get you to this place. It has parking lot and a camping zone, you will find a hand painted sign at its entrance that says "Parque Recreativo Los Chorros".
It is recommended that you wear "dry fit" kind of clothes, take an extra set of clothes with you, swinsuit, and some shoes to get wet (or water shoes) for the river.
Bring snacks for the walk and more than 1 bottle with hidration. First waterfall is approximately 50m high, there are the famous "chorros" or water streams that come out of stones and after that there is a second waterfall.
Its a nice, fast trip and not difficult to do, you also do not have to walk that much for this one.
Waze: Finca San Gerardo.
The property is at 13.5 kms away from downtown San Ramón and offers the tour Saturday and Sundays from 7:00am to 5:00pm, you can also call during week days to see if a visit can be scheduled, Bring comfortable clothes and trekking shoes, towel, swinsuit, a change of clothes, repelent and sun block.
There is a waterfall at less than 30 mins walk, you get to pass by some nice native trees and green fields, as well as forest areas. The waterfall has a good natural pool where you can swim, chill around and have something to eat. There are some interesting trails to do, specially one with bat caves inside a huge tree.
Its difficulty is a moderate level, and getting to the place is not so accessible without a vehicle.

Here you´ll find beautiful botanical gardens and more than 125 species of animals, such as; birds, mammals, and reptiles.
